There are over 111 crore Aadhar card holders and over 25 crore PAN card holders but only 1.22 crore out of 6 crores assesses have their PAN and Aadhar linked. The Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley through an amendment to the 2017-18 Finance Bill made it mandatory to enter the Aadhar details while filing income tax returns. To check the tax evasions done by some taxpayers by using multiple PAN cards, he has provided for the linking of Aadhar with the PAN of the assesse.
But many times, we find our most important documents such as voter ID, Aadhar, PAN etc. being tainted with silly mistakes from our or the concerned authorities side. All these documents are essential as they serve as our identification and residential proof. Even a single alphabet or number here and there can cause them to get rejected.
The income tax department along with making the e-filing and returns claims easier has provided a new online facility to correct errors in personal details like name, age, address and others in the permanent account number( PAN card) and the biometric identifier Aadhar card.
With the facility to link your Aadhar to your PAN, the department has launched two separate links on its website to update the changes in your existing PAN data/ or to apply for a new PAN card and the second is for people who wish to update their Aadhar details. The second link would direct them to ‘Aadhar self-service portal’ where they can apply for change in the desired fields by uploading the required documents.
You can follow the easy steps to make changes in your essential documents:-
Step 1: Visit the incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in website and click on the link provided on the left column of the page.
Step 2: when you click on the link, you are provided with two hyperlinks one for correcting your details in the PAN while the second will direct you to a different portal for correcting your Aadhar.
Step 3: Click on the first link if you wish to change your PAN details. You will be directed to a different website which is monitored by NSDL. You will be prompted to provide the necessary details for the same.
Alternatively, if you wish to make changes in your Aadhar database, then you need to click on the second hyperlink which would redirect you to Aadhar self-help portal.
By filing in the required fields and uploading the necessary documents of proof, you can apply for the update in your Aadhar card.
After your PAN and Aadhar details have been updated you can link both of them by making use of the link provided by the Income tax Department’s website. Prior verification is done by the UIDAI department and after which your details get linked. In case there is some anomaly found in your Aadhar details, UIDAI would send you an OTP to your registered mobile number.
