Reema Lagoo: The lady who changed stereotypes regarding the role of mother in Bollywood

Reema Lagoo was an adept and popular actress. She is known for her marvelous performances in plethora of movies, few of which includes the movies like Kal Ho Na Ho, Vaastav, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Maine Pyar Kiya and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. She played  mother to almost all superstars of the bollywood. There was a time in Hindu cinema when the role of mother was under stereotypes whereby she was a victim of circumstances and her child (the protagonist) used to fight for her. However, Reema Lagoo turned the table and brought fresh air in the industry by essaying a strong and supportive mother, rather than a victim.

She entered in the industry in 90s and that was her era where she was seen portraying the role of mother in almost all movies. Her characters were a blend of maternal quality and strong individuals. She loved her child extremely but also knew about the lines that cannot be crossed.   Her character depicted the real Indian mother who are bound by social restrictions but still support their kids.

In Rangeela she played the mother to an ultra ambitious girl. She supported her daughter in her far-fetched dream and showed us what an ideal mother is like. She essayed the character brilliantly and was a delight to watch onscreen. In Hum Saath Saath Hain she was a mother who kept her family together. She loved her biological children as well as her step child equally. She depicted a real life character that is bound to be caught by misunderstanding. Like real life characters, her character believed on what was told to her. She wasn’t a vamp but a woman who made few mistakes. As it is said “To err is human”. Then came Vaastav where she portrayed a mother who loved her child to death but was not blind in his love for him. She knew that his child is going on the wrong path and tried to bring him to the right way. However, when she realized that his son had gone far and done copious of sins, then she decides to liberate him from his wrong doings. The final scene of the movie accompanied high-voltage drama where she shot her son (played by Sanjay Dutt) to free him from his sins. This intense performance gave goose bumps to all the viewers and was indeed the best performance of her career.

Reema Lagoo was not only ruling the big screens in 90s but she was also essayed iconic characters in TV shows like Tu Tu Main Main and Shrimaan and Shrimati.

She played an evil saas in Tu Tu Main Main who was strong, bossy and made her bahu had a tough time but had a heart to admit her mistakes. The show was humorous and tickled the bones of the entire nation. It depicted the sweet and sour relationship between saas and bahu.

She portrayed different characters in her career and entertained us all thoroughly. She breathed her last on 22nd May 2017. She died due to cardiac attack at the age of 59. However she’ll be immortal in hearts of every bollywood fan.
