Bollywood is that naughty child of India who she loves dearly but also spanks regularly for being a brat. We had some brilliant movies last year, and also some deadly controversies that left quite a few stars and their fans shattered. Here are 5 controversies that rocked Bollywood:
Arijit Singh Laments on Facebook
When you upset ‘Bhai’ the wrong way, you can consider your career in Bollywood damaged. That is exactly what happened with singer Arijit Singh. In 2014, at an award show, singer Arijit Singh rubbed off ‘Bhai’ Salman Khan the wrong way, which apparently is something Salman Khan doesn’t forget, or forgive. A late night post by Arijit on Facebook claimed Salman had scrapped his version of the song Jag Ghoomeya that he recorded for Salman’s film Sultan, even though the rest of the production team had approved of it. He poured his heart out in a no holds barred public apology to Salman on Facebook to which Salman replied, ‘Arijit Singh who?
Udta Punjab vs The Censor Board
When Udta Punjab went to the table of the censor board, director Anurag Kashyap was in for a shock. The censor board had suggested 13 changes in the movie which meant a total of over 90 cuts. The movie focuses on the drug problem in Punjab and the censor board, fearing backlash, ordered the cuts. But Director Anurag Kashyap would release the movie his way, or no way! Almost the entire industry came out in support of Anurag and protested against the censorship. Udta Punjab finally won the battle and it turns out, the war with the censor board was the best publicity they could ever ask for. After all, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
Krrish 3, or Clash 3?
Apparently Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut dated, broke up, and dated again. These are only allegations, but what is out in the open are the legal notices slapped on each other, alleging mental harassment, hacking of accounts and stalking.
It apparently began with Kangana mentioning ‘silly exes’ in an interview with an apparent hint at Hrithik, who retaliated with a tweet. The battle went on until Hrithik slapped Kangana with a legal notice demanding a public apology for constantly propagating false stories. This took a turn for the worse and got very ugly with the media jumping on the spat and making it a public story.
Salman Khan’s ‘rape’ comment
Even Salman Khan wasn’t spared in 2016, when a controversial remark made during the filming of Sultan resulted in national outcry. Salman at an interview stated: “When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn’t walk straight”.
Woman organizations and groups, along with distressed Indians went on protest demanding the actor apologize, which he did. His fans were mum throughout the ordeal, and rightly so, for his comment deserved condemning. A few movies later however, all is forgiven and forgotten.
Fawad, go back
After the URI attacks in mid-2016, Indians went on a rampaging uproar demanding all Pakistanis, including affluent ones like Bollywood stars be deported to Pakistan. Caught in the crosshair of this attack was Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, and his latest movie with Karan Johar, Ae Dil Hain Mushkil. The movie was only allowed to be released after Karan Johar made a public announcement to not cast Pakistani actors henceforth.
